A Simple Guide to Paint Finishes

Choosing the right paint finish for the walls can be a difficult decision.

Choosing the right paint finish for the walls can be a difficult decision. Do you go for flat or glossy, eggshell or satin? What does it all mean, and which option is best?

This article looks at the basics of paint finishes to aid an informed decision about the next paint job.

Flat finishes

A flat finish gives walls a smooth, even appearance with little to no shine. This type of finish is ideal for concealing existing wall blemishes since it absorbs light instead of reflecting it.

Flat finishes are also great for covering up uneven surfaces and minor imperfections in walls. However, because this type of finish does not have a protective layer, it is more prone to damage from strong cleaning chemicals and minor scratches than other finishes.

Matte finishes

Matte finishes are perfect for those who want a subtle look without sacrificing quality. A matte finish resembles a soft, velvety surface with just enough sheen to give the walls a slight sparkle. They are also easy to clean and maintain, often requiring a gentle wipe-down with a damp cloth. As a result, they’re one of the most budget-friendly options out there.

The downside? Matte finishes don’t have much resistance to stains or smudges. As a result, they may require more frequent touch-ups in high-traffic areas.

Satin finish

Satin finishes are much more durable than matte and are often used in kitchens, bathrooms, hallways, children’s rooms, laundry rooms, entryways, dining rooms, and playrooms. This type of finish has a slight sheen that gives walls a nice glow while still being able to hide imperfections reasonably well.

Cleaning a satin finish is much easier than cleaning a matte finish since dirt and smudges easily wipe away with warm water and soap. The downside is that this finish shows more wear over time than other types.

Semi-gloss finish

Semi-gloss paint finishes have a higher sheen than satin but are still considered low-sheen.

This finish is perfect for high-traffic areas since it is among the most durable options. In addition, it works excellently at reflecting light and is ideal for trimming windows or doors.

A semi-gloss finish cleans easily with warm water and soap. It is most suitable for bathrooms or kitchens where there may be more moisture in the air.

The downside is that semi-gloss highlights any imperfections on walls, so this may not be the best option when painting over an area with lots of bumps or texture.

Clay paint finishes

Clay paints contain natural ingredients like limestone, clay, chalk, and pigments, forming a paste-like consistency when mixed with water. It is perfect for creating a matte finish with a minimal sheen and offers excellent coverage in one coat.

Clay paints are also more eco-friendly than other paints since they do not contain any VOCs (volatile organic compounds). They have excellent durability and can last up to 10 years if properly maintained.
